When the summer heat is on, there’s one place in Arizona that knows how to keep its cool—Clarkdale. Tucked along the banks of the Verde River and framed by the stunning red rocks of the Verde Valley, Clarkdale is your ticket to a wet and wild escape. Whether you’re dipping into hidden swimming holes, sipping crisp local wines, or dancing under the stars, this historic town makes summer an adventure worth taking.

Start with the River

Let’s get straight to the point: it’s hot. And Clarkdale’s coolest asset is its stretch of the Verde River. Beat the heat with a half-day kayaking tour from Clarkdale Kayak Co., a local favorite that lets you paddle through lush riparian habitats and splash to your heart’s content. Check out their Paddles to Pints, Verde River Guided Tour or embark on a Self Guided Adventure with them.

Looking for something a little more rugged? Head up to Parsons Trail in Sycamore Canyon, just north of town. This scenic hike ends at a serene swimming hole perfect for a dip—and maybe even a lazy afternoon nap in the shade.

Embrace the Monsoon Magic

If you’re lucky, your trip will coincide with Arizona’s monsoon season, which officially runs from June 15th through September 30th. There’s nothing like the drama of desert rain: the smell of creosote, the sound of distant thunder, the sight of towering clouds rolling over the red hills. It’s a beautiful and special time to be near the river.

But safety comes first. Sudden storms can lead to flash flooding—especially around the Verde River and Sycamore Creek. Even if it’s sunny where you are, rain upstream can raise water levels quickly. If storms are in the forecast, avoid hiking near washes or entering canyons, and never attempt to cross flooded areas.

Stay aware, stay dry when needed, and enjoy the desert’s monsoon magic from a safe—and spectacular—vantage point.

Ride into the Wild

When the sun starts to set, hop aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad for one of their summer Saturday Starlight excursions. These seasonal twilight train rides offer a completely different view of the canyon—cooler temps, golden-hour light, and desert wildlife coming to life.

Looking to pair your ride with a little vino? Book a seat on the Grape Train Escape, a wine tasting experience on select starlight departures that features regional wines and scenic sips.
