All Aboard: A Perfect Day at Verde Canyon Railroad

There’s something timeless about arriving at the depot in Clarkdale in the summertime. The air is warm, canyon breezes drift through the valley, and passengers gather beneath Arizona skies with cameras in hand, waiting for the journey ahead. Before the train even leaves the station, the experience has already begun.

A ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad is more than a scenic excursion through one of Arizona’s most beautiful landscapes — it’s an invitation to spend the day discovering Clarkdale itself. From historic depot experiences and dramatic canyon scenery to local patios, live music, and relaxed summer evenings, the railroad becomes part of a full small-town getaway rooted in slowing down and enjoying the journey.

Arrive Early at the Depot

A railroad day in Clarkdale isn’t meant to be rushed.

Before boarding, spend time exploring the historic depot grounds where the atmosphere feels nostalgic in the best possible way. Pick up your tickets, wander the pathways, and soak in the feeling of classic rail travel before departure.

Enjoy lunch or a drink at the Copper Spike Café, browse the Boxcar Gift Store, or step inside the John Bell Museum to learn more about the history of the railroad and the Verde Valley. Throughout the depot grounds, storyboards share the story of the canyon, the trains, and the communities connected by the rails.

Between vintage railcars, mountain views, and historic details, the depot itself feels like part of the destination — with no shortage of great photo opportunities before the train departs.

Summer Along the Rails

Once aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad, the scenery begins to unfold almost immediately.

The train winds north through a protected stretch of the Verde Canyon, tracing the curves of the Verde River beneath towering red rock cliffs and dramatic desert landscapes inaccessible by car. Passengers move between comfortable indoor seating and open-air viewing cars where canyon breezes, rushing river sounds, and panoramic views create an immersive connection to the landscape.

Summer aboard the railroad offers some of the most dramatic scenery of the year. Cottonwood and sycamore trees create lush green canopies along the river while monsoon season can bring cascading waterfalls, glowing sunsets, dramatic cloud formations, and vivid rainbows across the canyon walls.

Keep an eye out for soaring bald eagles, great blue herons, wild burros, deer, and other wildlife that inhabit the river corridor. Around every curve are photography moments — reflections on the water, historic trestles, rugged canyon walls, and ever-changing summer light across the Verde Valley.

But one of the most memorable parts of the journey may simply be the chance to unplug. Conversations replace notifications. Scenery replaces screens. Hours pass not in a rush, but in the steady rhythm of the rails.

Sunset, Starlight & Summer Adventures

Summer is also one of the most magical times to experience the railroad after dark.

The seasonal Saturday Starlight Adventure trains carry passengers through sunset, twilight, and eventually beneath star-filled skies deep within the canyon. As daylight fades, the train glides through a landscape illuminated by moonlight, canyon silhouettes, and some of Arizona’s most beautiful summer skies.

For wine lovers, the popular Grape Train Escape pairs the scenic journey with onboard wine tastings and charcuterie, creating a nostalgic summer evening experience that feels both elegant and relaxed.

Whether riding during the day or beneath the stars, the railroad captures something increasingly rare — the feeling of slowing down enough to truly enjoy where you are.

After the Ride

Back in Clarkdale, the day doesn’t have to end when the train returns to the depot.

Spend the evening exploring town with dinner, drinks, and live music. Grab a craft beer at Smelter Town Brewery, settle into the patio atmosphere at 10-12 Lounge, or stop by Dream West Caboose on Main Street for a pulled pork sandwich and a uniquely Clarkdale dining experience inside a restored railcar.

Just down the street, Hermosillo Hot Dogs serves far more than its name suggests, offering flavorful Sonoran-style dishes, tacos, loaded hot dogs, and casual comfort food perfect after a long afternoon on the rails.

As the sun sets over the Verde Valley and the evening cools, Clarkdale settles into a slower rhythm that makes visitors want to stay a little longer.

And honestly, you should.

Rather than rushing home after the ride, consider spending the night in Clarkdale. From historic hotels and boutique stays to cozy nearby accommodations, staying overnight allows you to fully experience the relaxed pace, local flavor, and timeless atmosphere that make this railroad town so memorable.
